About Lemmy Kilmister

Lemmy Kilmister was a British-born singer and bass player whose career spanned more than 4 decades. He was best known as the frontman and lead singer of the rock band The Motorhead. Lemmy became a rock legend for his unique style and his legacy lives on through the band’s legions of fans.

Lemmy Kilmister was born in 1945 in Buckinghamshire, England. His parents were named Anne and Kenneth Kilmister when he was born. His father died when he was young and Lemmy grew up in a turbulent household with his mother.

He attended Church Road Junior School in Stoke-on-Trent and would often skip class. After an expletive-laced exchange with a teacher after being reprimanded, he dropped out of school at age 15. He would later return to school and obtained a diploma in art and design.

After graduating Lemmy joined the Air Force where he would learn how to fly planes. He became a bombardier on Vickers Viscount turboprop airliners. He would eventually grow tired of his job and decide to leave the Air Force.

After leaving the Air Force, he settled in London and became a semi-professional drummer for a group called The Rockin’ Vickers. He was paid about $10 to $15 per gig. After 2 years with the group he decided to go solo and joined another group Gipsy Love in 1967.

Later Lemmy got a new band together called Opal Butterfly which morphed into the band Hawkwind. Lemmy used the band Hawkwind as a springboard to launch his solo career and was joined by drummer Simon King. Lemmy changed his name to Lemmy (for legal reasons), but decided that was too long and started using the nickname “Lemmy” instead.

Hawkwind was signed to the same label as early proto-punk band The Stooges, which helped Lemmy reach a more rock audience
